 Largest open sandwich: Fremont sets world record (Video)

FREMONT, NE, USA -- One of the highlights of the 25th annual John C. Fremont Days was a 1,652-pound open-faced sandwich - which sets the new world record for the Largest open sandwich .

  The previous Guinness world record for the largest open sandwich was a barbecue pork bun weighing 1,337 pounds, which was prepared by Moore's BBQ in New Bern, North Carolina.

Guinness World Records also recognized the longest sandwich; it measured 634.50 m (2,081 ft) and was created by Pietro Catucci and Antonio Latte.

  The key ingredient in the sandwich was about 1,400 pounds of Spam donated by the local Hormel plant, which is one of two places where the canned meat is made.

  The Spam was placed on top of a massive slice of bread made from 350 pounds of dough.

   "It's a real treat for the 25th anniversary," Don Cunningham, the JCF Days board member who thought up the idea, said.

   The official weigh-in was conducted by troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol.   They put the weight at about 300 pounds more than the previous record.

  "It's just a great day for Fremont," said Mayor Scott Getzschman, according to the Freemont Tribune.
 "When you look at the community involvement, Getzschman employees, Hy-Vee employees, Hormel employees cooking up the SPAM and then just all the people from the community that got involved and started to put this together, the excitement just grew and grew."

   After the crowd that had gathered celebrated the possible world record, many eat a sample of the giant sandwich. "When you look at the excitement of the community and everything that's been part of this, it's all worth it," Getzschman said.
