of La Cañada Flintridge
LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE, CA, USA -- After days of
cooking, volunteers revealed a Rice Krispies treat at a fundraiser
for the Community
Center of La Cañada Flintridge
weighing in at 10,460
pounds - which sets the world record for the Largest
Rice Krispies treat
.

The previous Guinness world record for the Largest
Rice Krispies treat
was 2,500 pounds.
Hundreds of volunteers came together to
make the Largest
Rice Krispies treat
in just over 48 hours. Food scientist
Ted Russin, a San Diego chef and engineer Scott Stuckel helped
with the project to make sure the finished product was edible,
tasty and structurally sound, TLC spokesman Dustin Smith said.
Once it was weighed and measured, pieces
of the gigantic dessert were auctioned off to raise more money
for the community center.
To balance costs for the center, a number of utilities
and items used for the fundraiser were donated, including
the supplies for the Rice Krispies treat, the booths and the
food.
5,000 pounds of Rice Krispies was donated
by Kellogg's and 7,000 pounds of marshmallows were used. Each
marshmallow at the top weighted about three pounds.
Food booths were hosted by Round Table,
Los Gringos Locos, Jersey Mike’s and the La Cañada Flintridge
Country Club, with all proceeds going directly to the center.
Likewise, Jazmine’s Spa and Salon offered mini manicures for
children while Flintridge Family Chiropractic offered massages.
The center netted about $5,000, after expenses.
“We’re happy with that number,” said Nordvedt. “We had about
three weeks to put this on and we worked as hard as we could,
but the amount of community support was a great part of the
turnout. It was a successful day.
“The community center is used heavily,” said
community center board member Tom Reynolds. “This is a town
that doesn’t see itself needing a community center, but we
have 2,500 people touch the walls each week. The community
came here and supported something for the community center.”
A number of La Cañada organizations and
volunteers manned booths while the producers and creators
of the TV show prepared the big reveal.
The
process to build the treat was documented by the The Learning
Channel for a new special to air this summer called "Mega
Bites." The program will likely air on The Learning Channel
in June, though the program hasn’t officially been picked
up by the network.
