The Guinness world record for the largest cup of ice cream weighed 8,865 lb (4,021 kg) and was made by Baskin-Robbins at their headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest ice cream cone; it measured 2.81 m (9 ft 2.63 in) in height and was achieved by Mirco Della Vecchia and Andrea Andrighetti (both Italy) during an event organised by Rimini Fiera.

Approximately 180 GSSM students, faculty and staff participated in building the 815 foot, two inch cool and creamy extravaganza.

"In shortly more that 30 minutes, the 180 participants worked together to fill the trough, stretched in a giant U-shape on the lawn in front of the school, section by section," the SC Now reported.
"As the final cherry was placed on top of the final slab of ice cream, a huge cheer filled the air and whipped cream fell from the air like confetti."

The previous Guinness world record for the longest ice cream sundae is 670 feet, one inch by the Light Youth Group in Cavalier, ND, set on June 9, 2012.

The world's longest ice cream sundae was enjoyed by local leaders, Hartsville residents and GSSM alumni who came to support the students, faculty and staff during this incredible undertaking.

J.J. Tramontana, director of dining services at GSSM, along with an 11-student committee, met on a weekly basis to plan and prepare for this challenge.

The ice cream dish was constructed from gutter material and stations of students scooped out ice cream and added toppings. The sundae consisted of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, chopped M&Ms®, whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

 The Numbers:
  - 390 gallons of ice cream.

    -    100 pounds of M&Ms candies.
  - 16 gallons of syrup.

    - 120 cans of whipped cream.
  - 5,000 Marichino cherries.
  - 880 feet of aluminum, gutter-style trough serving as a giant, snake-like ice cream dish.
  - 180 students, faculty and staff from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics with a deliciously sweet goal in mind.

This record-breaking event was made possible through the generous donation of ice cream by Pet Dairy, table rentals by Ace Hardware, gutters by Eddie Pate and other funding from the GSSM Foundation. No state funding was used for this project.

The gutters used to create the ice cream sundae dish will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.
