World's first striped pepper: Asda sets world record

LONDON, UK -- Asda has developed the world's first striped pepper, in an attempt to encourage children to eat healthily; dubbed the 'Asda Extra Special Stripy Pepper', the one-of-a-kind vegetable contains more vitamin C than an orange and is claimed to contain the "dual sweetness" of both a red and yellow pepper,
according to the World Record Academy .

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest pepper grinder is 4.98 m (16 ft 4 in) tall and 43.1 cm (17 in) in diameter, achieved by Algonquin College as measured at their premises in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on 14 August 2014.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest chilli-pepper string; it measured 1,395 m (4,576 ft 9 in) and was made by citizens of Suncheon City, South Korea, on 11 October 2008. The string consisted of 29,037 red chilli peppers. 2,533 people participated in making the string.

Recent research from the supermarket revealed that 78 per cent of children avoid eating fruits and vegetables every day, with 75 per cent of parents admitting it is because their offspring dislike trying new things.

Sixty-six per cent of parents added that they often find discarded pieces of fruit and vegetable hidden under the table after meals.

Charlie Mills, fresh produce manager at Asda , said: "We know parents can have a hard time getting their children to eat their five a day, but we've been working with growers for seven years, and we're confident our pepper will earn its stripes with mums and kids alike.

"It's been a long road but we're thrilled to finally see the Asda Extra Special Stripy Pepper hit shelves and this is just the beginning of a new fruit and veg revolution."
