Longest interval between birth of twins: Irish twins break Guinness world record

GLENMORE, Ireland -- Glenmore resident Maria Jones-Elliott, 34, gave birth to Amy three months prematurely and she weighed just 1lb 3oz; Maria, of Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny, remained in hospital and docs finally induced her again at 36 weeks and she gave birth to Katie, who weighed 5lb 10oz., setting the new world record for the Longest interval between birth of twins, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

 The Guinness world record for Longest interval between birth of twins was set by Peggy Lynn of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; . Lynn gave birth to her twin girl and boy, Hanna and Eric, 84 days apart between they years of 1995 and 1996.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for Largest gathering of twins - opposite sex, set by a total of 806 pairs of opposite sex fraternal twins who gathered at Chung-Shan Hall, Taipei, Taiwan.

  Maria Jones-Elliot went into labour three months early with Amy, who weighed just 1lb 3oz; her sister Katie did not arrive for another 87 days.

  Once she had given birth to Amy, Maria's contractions stopped and despite efforts to induce her the following day, Katie remained in the womb.

  Maria was finally induced again at 36 weeks, giving birth to Katie, who weighed 5lb 10oz, after just over an hour.

  The 34-year-old, who is also mother to Olivia, 14 and Jack, 11, was not able to see Amy until for the first four days after her birth. She then had to wait nearly five weeks until she was able to hold her for the first time.

  Eddie O'Donnell, a doctor at Waterford Regional Hospital, said most mothers deliver twins in quick succession. He said the births of these two twins not only broke the record for the longest interval between births, beating the current record of 84 days, but is also extremely rare.
