 Largest gathering of people dressed as nuns: 'Nunday' sets world record (VIDEO)

Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland -- 1,436 men and women dressed as nuns descended on Listowel for 'Nunday' to help raise funds for Pieta House, a charity aimed at preventing suicide and self-harm - setting the new world record for the Largest gathering of people dressed as nuns, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

  "The excitement in the town was immense and everyone really got into the spirit of things," said organizer Cora O'Brien.

The Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people in one place dressed as nuns was set at Pinewood Studios in London and involved 250 nuns in one place.

 Guinness World Records also recognized the largest gathering of people dressed as mobile phones: 275 participants, at an event organised in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

  Organizers provided all registered participants with a black habit, a white coif, and a black veil for the event.

  The official count took place at 6 o'clock in a football field in Listowel .

  The event in Frank Sheehy Park was the first official function of newly elected mayor of Listowel, Tom Barry, who arrived with his chain of office and, of course, in a habit.

 "I'm delighted to be here and it's great to see so many people at this fantastic occasion for a great cause," Mr Barry said.

  Afterwards, the 1,436 nuns paraded through the town.
