Youngest person to visit the North Pole: Jaimie Donovan sets world record

The Guinness world record for the Youngest person to visit the North Pole was set by Alicia Hempleman-Adams (UK), who stood at the geographic North Pole at the age of 8 years 173 days. She flew to the pole to meet her father, the well-known adventurer David Hempleman-Adams (UK), at the end of his successful trek to the pole.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the youngest person to have visited both geographical poles, set by Jonathan Silverman (USA), who reached the North Pole on 25 July 1999 and the South Pole on 10 January 2002, aged 11 years 211 days.

"It was cold and the helicopter was noisy," Jaimie said after arriving back on dry land.
"I loved the North Pole and I want to go back." Jaimie and her teddy bear were standing on the ice at 5.30am on Easter Sunday.

The youngster has broken a world record - by one day - set by the daughter of British adventurer David Hempleman-Adams, Alicia, in 1998.

Jaimie's father Richard Donovan, who holds the record for competing seven marathons on seven continents in five days, said he was proud of his daughter's record.

'I decided to bring Jaimie and my wife Caroline this year as it was the tenth year of the race and they were long overdue a trip to see what I've been working hard to achieve for the last decade,' he said.

Mr Donovan's North Pole Marathon, which sees athletes run ten 4.22km circuits carved into the ice, was patrolled by armed personnel this year after polar bears were spotted in the area.
