  Fastest drive from Cape Town to London: British pair smash Guinness world record *

LONDON, UK -- Philip Young, 53, and Paul Brace, 49, arrived at Marble Arch in London after a 10,000 mile, 10-day journey across 13 countries in a Fiat Panda from Cape Town to London in just over ten days, which sets the new world record for the Fastest drive from Cape Town to London , according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

 The Guinness world record is 14 days, 19 hours and 26 minutes and was set by British Army officer Brigadier John Hemsley and his wife Lucy in 1983 - in a Range Rover V8.

UPDATE:
Whilst in no way wishing to denigrate a really splendid achievement, it is necessary to point out, however, that Philip Young and Paul Brace's attempt (as with Eric Jackson and Bob Bean's drive in 1963), great as it was, should not actually qualify as a record for two reasons:

  - First, it was not truly overland (apart, of course, from the Channel) as they shipped the car across the Mediterranean.

  - Second,... (not taken into consideration by WRA).

   For your interest I attach a copy of the official RACMSA certificate of authentication (signed on 16 February 1983, also certifying the departure time which was authenticated by the Motor Sport Governing Authority of South Africa) for our fully overland record in 1983 which I believe has yet to be broken, since all other subsequent attempts have involved sea, river or air stages or, in some case, invoked force majeure.

  Incidentally, to achieve a wholly overland route, it was necessary to drive through 21 countries (11,600 miles) as opposed to 13 countries (10,300 miles).
