 Longest railway platform: Gorakhpur breaks Guinness world record


GORAKHPUR, India -- Gorakhpur, a city in backward eastern Uttar Pradesh near the Nepal border, now has a platform measuring 1,366.33 metres with ramp and 1,355.40 metres without it, breaking the Guinness World Records' record of 833m set by the platform at Kharagpur Station, West Bengal, India, and

The Guinness World Records' record for the Longest railway platform was set by the platform at Kharagpur Station, West Bengal, India, which measures 833m 2733ft in length.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest station by number of platforms; it is Grand Central Terminal, Park Avenue and 42nd Street, New York City, USA, built from 1903–13 which has 44 platforms. They are situated on two underground levels with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower. The station covers 19 ha (48 acres), and on average some 660 Metro North trains and 125,000 commuters use it every day.

  Gorakhpur railway station is a major junction. It is the headquarters of Northern Eastern Railways (NER) and was formed in 1952 by combining two railway systems.

  NER has 3402.46 route kms with 486 stations. NER primarily serves the areas of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand & western districts of Bihar.

  Previously, Kharagpur in West Bengal have had the longest platform at 1,072 metres, followed by State Street Center subway station, Chicago (1,067 metres, the longest in the US).

  With the inauguration of the remodelled yard, Gorakhpur now has a platform measuring 1,366.33 metres with ramp and 1,355.40 metres without it.

  Speaking to PTI, Shri K.K. Atal, General Manager, North Eastern Railway, said, "I congratulate the people of Gorakhpur on getting the privilege of world's longest railway platform in the city.

  "I also appreciate the cooperation of the people of Gorakhpur as more than half of the work was completed within 11 days. I also appreciate the dedication of rail employees and officers who worked day and night for to ensure completion of work within the time limit."

  On the occasion, the GM announced award of Rs 1 lakh each for the construction department, signal construction department and Lucknow division and an award of Rs 50,000 for the headquarters.
