  Largest gathering of High Nelly bicycles: Durrow Club sets world record

Durrow, County Laois, Ireland -- 348 High Nelly bicycle enthusiasts dressed up as delivery boys, gardai and postmen from yesteryear to cycle their elaborate collection of High Nellys on a five-mile stretch of road between Durrow and Abbeyleix in Co Laois - setting the new world record for the largest gathering of High Nelly bicycles, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

  The Guinness world record for the longest single line of bicycles consisted of 916 cyclists in an event organized by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge 169 (USA) in Davis, California, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest bicycle bell ensemble: it consisted of 503 participants playing German Folk Songs and hymns at the University of Leipzig, Germany .

  A world record 348 High Nelly bicycle enthusiasts saddled up to celebrate a little bit of nostalgia.

  There were tandems, delivery bikes, butcher bikes, cargo bikes, World War Two bikes with rifle holsters, gents' and ladies' bikes, even teenage bikes.

  The world record attempt was organized by Durrow HighNelly bike club Durrow, Co Laois in association with Bob's Bar.

  Event planner Marty Mannering, basking in the glory of a hugely successful event, said that the resurgence of High Nelly enthusiasm was to be expected.
