She averaged just two hours sleep a night during the challenge, in which she raised money for the charity, Help for Heroes.

She beat the female world record of 395 miles. Ms Anderson, who is the only woman to have run across the Arctic, which she did in under six days, said she was really pleased with her achievement.

"Disappointed that I didn't do as well as I could've done because of my stress fracture and not feeling well, but I got the world record so that's what counted," she said.

Mimi is already the holder of the female John O'Groats to Land's End record, as well as the winner of races in the Arctic Circle and the Kalahari desert.

The Guinness World Record for the greatest distance travelled on a treadmill in 24 hours by a woman is 247.2 km (153.6 miles) by Edit Berces (Hungary) at the Eurocentre Shopping Mall, Budapest.

Guinness World Records also lists Arulanantham Suresh Joachim (Australia), who ran a distance of 257.88 km (160.24 miles) in 24 hours at Square One, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
