Largest fishing tournament: Las Huellas Fishing Kids set world record

BROWNSVILLE, TX, USA -- The new world record for largest fishing tournament now belongs to the 2,206 children who cast in the Las Huellas KIDFISH tournament last Saturday, organized by the KIDFISH Foundation, a Little River-Academy-based nonprofit.largest fishing tournament

The previous Guinness world record for the largest fishing tournament consisted of 796 participants and was achieved by Deportivo de Pesca Manzanillo AC (Mexico).

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most participants in a sea angling competition: 785, achieved by Blue Sea Sport Angling Club (Malta).

The record-setting feat was years in the making, said KIDFISH president and local resident J.P. Brazeal, who pitched the idea to Brownsville officials after researching the possibility about three years ago.

Guinness required that an overall winner be declared, which hadn't been planned, but when 4-year-old Maryhan Saleh hooked the longest fish — a 27½-inch catfish — she was named the winner, Mendez said.

There also were three winners in each of three age categories, 6 years and under, 7 to 11, and 12 to 16.

"I hope this record will hold for a while," Mendez said.
