 Farthest distance static cycled in 24 hours: Team CanCare sets world record

HONEYDEW, South Africa -- Six South African women ( Jeanetta Naude, Amanda Albertyn, Anzel Steyn, Michelle Wicks, Barbara Fitzgeraldand Elize Breytenbach) cycled a distance of 722.03 miles (1,162km) in a spinning marathon in just 24 hours - setting the new world record for the The farthest distance static cycled in 24 hours by a female team.

The Guinness world record for the greatest distance on a static cycle in 12 hours is 324.12 km (201.4 miles) achieved by Fabienne Müller (Switzerland) .

Guinness World Records also recognized the farthest distance static cycling in one minute:2,040 metres (1.27 miles), achieved by Miguel Angel Castro (Spain).

   This was in aid of fundraising for the Cancare foundation. The distance was the equivalent distance between Johannesburg and George in 24 hours.

  "We are proud to say that team Cancare from South Africa was the first in the world to set such an amazing record that will prove to be a challenge for another team to beat. Hopefully it will stay in the books for a long time to come." said Roelf de Beer, a sponsor of Cancare.

  The Spinning Marathon took place in Honeydew Toyota.

  The women, Jeanetta Naude, Amanda Albertyn, Anzel Steyn, Michelle Wicks, Barbara Fitzgerald and Elize Breytenbach, took turns on the bike having to cycle for 30 minutes each and having two and a half hours break inbetween to allow for rest, sleep and to eat.

  When ladies had to exchange places, the bike was not allowed to stop. The current cyclist would have to get up off the seat and while peddling, the new cyclist would adjust the seat to her needs and when ready, the exchange had to take place in under 10 seconds.

  Ladies who are experienced and professional cyclists and instructors, trained on their own. The ladies managed to raise an amazing R35 000 for such a worthy cause.

  Sponsors for the event were Panarotti's pasta and PVM Nutritional Sciences (Proteins. Vitamins. Minerals.) energy drinks.
