The Guinness world record for the most sets of twins in the same academic year at one school is 16 pairs and is shared by three schools. There are 16 sets of twins who were all enrolled in grade 9 at Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, USA, in the academic year 2011-2012. There are also 16 sets of twins who were all enrolled in grade 10 at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, USA, in the academic year 2011-2012 and 16 sets of twins in the graduating class of 2014 at the Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Most multiple birth sets in the same academic year at one school, set by the 2014 graduating class of Maine South High School, which had 3 sets of triplets.

Highcrest Middle School in Wilmette has 24 sets of twins in fifth grade. That represents about 10% of the class, which has about 475 students.

The discovery was made by 11-year-old twins Luke and Ryan Novosel, who attend Highcrest Middle School in Wilmette, a northern suburb of Chicago, when they were looking around for a way to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

They counted up the twins in their fifth grade and found a world record for a single grade in a school.

Nancy Fendley, mother of Luke and Ryan, is proud of her sons for submitting the application: "We were absolutely shocked … I think it's just statistically kind of bizarre … The whole school thinks it's the greatest thing. … It's been such a fun, creative experience."

The current Guinness world record, 16 sets of twins, is concurrently held by three other schools.

Some fun facts from Highcrest's twins-a-palooza:
 # The vast majority are fraternal: There are three sets of boy-boy twins, 11 sets of girl-girl twins, and 10 sets of boy-girl twins. The two sets of identical twins are girls.
 # Different birthdays: Two sets of twins were born on different sides of midnight.
 # It could get even more twin-y: Highcrest students will eventually hit high school, which will pool other schools—and possibly more twins.

Federal statistics show about 33 twins per 1,000 births in 2010.
