  Most selfies taken in 24 hours: Samsung breaks Guinness World Records record (VIDEO)

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa--Samsung Electronics South Africa has successfully broken the Guinness World Records world record for the most contributions to an online album of self-portrait photographs (selfies) in 24 hours; the record breaking number of selfies was an astounding 12 598, which sets
the new world record for the Most selfies taken in 24 hours, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

  Photo: Samsung announced that it has officially broken the Guinness World Record for the most selfies taken in 24-hours. The attempt took place last week in South Africa, following the launch of the two Galaxy A series smartphones. The South Korean company assembled 'selfie' booth's, armed with the latest Galaxy A3 and A5 handsets, in all the major shopping centres in Cape Town and Johannesburg. ( enlarge photo )

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest online photo album of self-portrait photographs (selfies) contains 103,690 photos and was achieved by Atasun Optik (Turkey), in Istanbul, Turkey, on 20 September 2014.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most self-portrait photographs (selfies) taken simultaneously; it is 2,997 achieved by the Scheduling Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on 24 October 2014.

   The attempt took place at Sandton City in Johannesburg and Canal Walk in Cape Town, in partnership with 947 FM and KFM.

   A total of 12,803 selfies were taken with the company's Galaxy A series devices, which was 3,000 more than the previous record.

   During the attempt, the tech giant also gave away 100 Galaxy A3 and A5′s, as well as several selfie sticks, to participants. You can check out the entire album of selfies here .

    The activations were perfectly paired with the South African launch of Samsung's new GALAXY A-Series of smartphones, which comes packed with enhanced selfie features.

    Justin Hume, director of product marketing, integrated mobility at Samsung Electronics SA says, "We are delighted to receive confirmation that we were successful in our attempt. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took a selfie and helped us to break the record, especially here on SA soil."

   Thousands of participants answered the call to have their selfies captured and be part of an opportunity to get into the records books. In addition to helping to break a World Record, the public also had the chance to get their hands on their own Samsung GALAXY A-Series smartphones, as the first ten people who arrived at venues in both cities received the new device.
