Most river lamps lit: China breaks Guinness  world record

JILIN, China -- A total of 14,630 lamps were lit and floated on the Songhuajiang River in the city of Jilin, Jilin province, during the 3rd River Lamp Festival of Jilin, breaking the previous Guinness world record of 10,121 lamps and setting the new world record for the Most river lamps lit, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

 The Guinness world record for the Largest collection of oil lamps was set by Gerd Bonk (Germany), who has a collection of 356 different antique oil lamps.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest floor lamp; it measures 7.69 m (25 ft 2 in) high and was created by Charbel Barouky and Abdo Barouky of Wadi Chahrour, Lebanon in September 2003. The lamp shade is made of iron and fabric and measures 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in diameter.

  A total of 14,630 lamps were lit and floated on the Songhuajiang River in the city of Jilin, bordering Russia, North Korea and Inner Mongolia.

  The lamps were lit and placed on the river by 300 local residents within 10 minutes during the 3rd River Lamp Festival of Jilin.

  The former world record was 10,121 lamps, which was set by residents in the city last year.

  The event attracted many tourists and photographers.
