  Loudest purr: Merlin the cat breaks Guinness World Records record (VIDEO)

TORQUAY, UK -- Merlin, the rescue center cat from Torquay, Devon (UK), has bagged himself a World Record for the loudest purr by a domestic cat; measuring in at 67.8 decibels, Merlin's purr has also scored him an appearance on Channel 5's Cats Make You Laugh Out Loud 2 for the record-breaking achievement, according to the World Record Academy .

The Guinness World Records' record for the loudest purr by a domestic cat is 67.8 db(A) and was achieved by Merlin, owned by Tracy Westwood (UK), at her home in Torquay, Devon, UK, on 2 April 2015. Merlin is 13 years old.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest fur on a cat; it is 25.68 cm (10.11 in) and belongs to Sophie Smith, owned by Jami Smith (USA), as measured in Oceanside, California, USA, on 09 November 2013.

   Merlin, aged 13, lives in Torquay with his owner Tracy Westwood and her daughter Alice. Tracy adopted Merlin when he was just a kitten from an animal rescue centre in Kingskerswell.

   Tracy said: "Occasionally when he's really loud I have to repeat myself. When you're watching films you have to turn the telly up or put him out of the room, if he's eating he'll purr loudly. I can hear him when I'm drying my hair.

     "If he's cleaning he gets louder and sometimes if the telephone rings I do get people asking me what's that noise in the background, I tell them it's the cat but I don't know if they believe me."
