Guinness World Records presented them with a certificate at their flagship event in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire confirming that they have broken the world record for the most people singing and signing a song simultaneously. The exact number of participants is still to be confirmed.

The previous Guinness world record for the most people singing and signing a song simultaneouslywas 13,418 people.

Guinness World Records also recognized the most people singing along to a karaoke video game:10,490, achieved by the crowd at Los Premios 40 Principales, Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid, in Madrid, Spain.

Steve Powell, chief executive at SignHealth, said: "We organised the sign2sing event to help raise awareness of deafness and the work we do at SignHealth.

" It was also a fundraiser for the charity through sponsorship from businesses and a voluntary donation of £2 for everyone taking part.

"It has been a truly fantastic event and we're extremely grateful for everyone who took part. At the moment we're still counting the money raised but we're hoping it will make a significant contribution to the work of the charity."

Young people from all over the country and overseas learned to sign The New Seekers 1970s song 'I'd like to Teach the World to Sing' for the record breaking attempt.

SignHealth will be organising the event again next year. People wishing to take part are invited to contact the charity to register their interest.
