  Most People Dressed As Batman: Calgary breaks Guinness World Records' record (VIDEO)

CALGARY, Canada -- A total of 542 employees of Nexen Energy, a Canadian oil and gas company, dressed in Batman costumes, started the company's 2014 United Way campaign "From Suits to Superheros" by gathering outside the company's Calgary headquarters to set a World Record for the Most People Dressed as Batman, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

The Guinness World Records' record for the Most expensive Batman memorabilia sold at auction was set by a Batmobile used in the 1960s Batman TV show sold at the Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottdale, Arizona, USA, on 19 January 2013 for a record $4,620,000 (£2,953,397), inclusive of the seller's premium.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Superman; it is 867, achieved by Escapade (UK) at Kendal Calling, in Lowther Deer Park, Cumbria, UK.

  "Our employees are true super heroes and we're very proud of the teamwork and community spirit they've demonstrated in supporting this initiative," says Fang Zhi, CEO, Nexen Energy ULC.

 "Our goal was to show a unified spirit in kicking off Nexen's annual United Way campaign and also to raise awareness for United Way of Calgary and Area. We needed 250 or more participants to set the Batman record and I'm very proud to say that we've more than doubled that figure."

   In order to be counted in the record attempt, each costume needed to consist of a full body outfit in black, a yellow belt and a black cape and mask. Participants had to stand together for a five-minute countdown.

  Since 1996, Nexen has raised more than $17 million for United Way of Calgary and Area, made up of employee donations which are matched dollar-for-dollar by Nexen. For 2014, Nexen is attempting to increase employee participation while inspiring other companies and organizations in Calgary to support the United Way.
