"We took our record back," said Merian, a member of the Greater Brockton Holiday Parade planning committee, who planned the Santa Hat Challenge.
"We're bringing attention to the City of Brockton and its history," said John Merian.

The previous Guinness World record for the Most santa hat wearers in one place at one time was 700, set by people in Mullingar, Ireland, last year .
Brockton had previously held the Guinness world record of 507 in 2008.

"So apparently it looks like we went over 800 today and we're so thrilled because we're the city of champions and home of the first department store Santa and you can see how great everyone feels about it," said John Merian, the parade organizer.

The crowd danced to the songs "YMCA" by the Village People and "We are the champions" by Queen.
Mayor Linda Balzotti said she was proud of the hundreds of residents who turned out. "It's the City of Champions. I expected no less, so I am so proud of all Brocktonians who came out today to help us break this record," Balzotti said. "It's a great day in the city."

The department store Santa Claus has ties to Massachusetts - 120 years ago the idea of the department store Santa came to life in the city of Brockton.

"Edgar was a philanthropic man and brought to life the character of Santa Claus. So this event is a way to honor him and bring our city together to have fun," Merian said.

Guinness World Records also recognized the Largest gathering of Santa Claus: 12,965 people dressed up as Santa or Santa's helper during the Santa Dash event in Liverpool City Centre .

Two years ago, over 500 Brockton residents put on Santa hats to celebrate their community and James Edgar, a Scottish immigrant turned successful businessman and philanthropist, and in 1890 the first department store Santa.
