The Guinness World Records' record for the longest high five chain consists of 1,391 participants and was achieved by NU Skin Greater China (China) at the Shanghai Expo Center in Shanghai, China.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most people performing a high five simultaneously; it was 4,699, achieved by The Kroger Co. (USA) at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

"It was a neat experience to see it go viral," Fears, the United Way executive director, told the Tribune-Star.

"We wanted it to be a community awareness event for United Way and Terre Haute, and that's what it was. ... Anytime someone breaks the Guinness World Record, people get excited; they know how difficult it is."

The event was designed to build momentum for the 2014 United Way Campaign; Fears hopes the campaign will set a record for money raised.

The High Five event, which raised about $3,000, served as a kickoff event. The money goes into the campaign and is earmarked for United Way programs that benefit children.
