  Largest gathering of Elvis impersonators: Porthcawl sets world record

Porthcawl, UK -- 814 people turned out dressed as Elvis at Porthcawl during the Porthcawl Elvis Festival, the biggest event of its kind in Europeand; they sang the 1956 hit 'Hound Dog' and then got together - led by the current holder of the title 'Best Welsh Elvis', Darren Jones - to parade from Trecco Bay into Porthcawl - setting a new world record for the largest gathering of Elvis Presley impersonators , according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

The Guinness world record for the largest gathering of Elvis impersonators was 645 and was achieved by Nike Western Europe at the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest Elvis Presley singing marathon: 43 hr 11 min 11 sec, performed by Thomas 'Curtis' Gäthje (Germany) at Modehaus Böttcher, Heide, Germany.

  Festival organiser Peter Phillips said he was "overwhelmed and thrilled" to break the Guinness world record for the biggest gathering of Elvises.

  The festival, which was first staged nine years ago, is being held at Trecco Bay Holiday Park.

   Mr Phillips said: "We asked staff from Bridgend council to act as independent adjudicators and they worked together to count the Elvis impersonators.

 "We had all sorts of different Elvises aged from three to 80 and from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Malta and even Brazil.

 "They were wearing all manner of Elvis costumes from gold lame jackets, to leather jump suits and GI uniforms."
