The
previous Guinness world record for the Largest
clog dance
was set by 475 people in The Netherlands
in 2006.
Each year during the first weekend in May,
Pella, Iowa celebrates their Dutch heritage as dancers perform
in wooden shoes beneath windmills and the air is thick with
the smell of baked goods for sale.
Some dancers stuffed their wooden clogs
with sponges or wore thick socks.
Event co-ordinator Sallie DeReus said people
were inspired by a newspaper article.
The participants, wearing wooden shoes
and performing a simple Dutch dance, surrounded the downtown
square and beyond, holding the dance for five minutes.
Amy VanHaaften, who served on the steering committee
for the wooden shoe dance, was amazed at how successful the
event turned out.
“I can remember having some meetings earlier this
winter, and we were like ‘Oh, will we ever get to 500, will
we ever get to 1000,’ and just as the time came closer and
the numbers grew and grew, we just never, ever imagined that
it would be this successful,” said VanHaaften afterwards.
