 SAN FRANCISCO,US--
From 18:16 UTC on June 17, 2008 to 18:16 UTC on June 18, 2008, 8,002,530 people downloaded Firefox 3, the new web browser from Mozilla , setting the world record for the Most downloaded application in 24 hours .

Firefox 3 passed its predecessor's first-day download total of 1.6 million in five hours, according to the company.

The software, available for free , loads Web pages as much as three times quicker than Firefox 2, increases protection against malicious software attacks and makes it easier to access frequently visited sites, Mozilla said.

At their busiest the servers were handling more than 9,000 downloads per minute. Within five hours the number of downloads for Version 3.0 exceeded the 1.6 million set by Firefox 2.0 in October 2006.

In total Firefox 3.0 was downloaded 8.002 million times over the 24 hour record setting period. The figure beats the five million Mozilla predicted before the day.

The surge of interest in Firefox 3.0 has continued and Mozilla has reported that the software has now been downloaded more than 10 million times.

However, some of the shine of the launch was removed by reports that a security firm had already found a flaw in the browser.

DV Labs/Tipping Point reported a flaw only five hours after Firefox 3.0 debuted. The flaw potentially lets an attacker take over a PC if a user clicks on a booby-trapped link.

Firefox accounts for about 18 percent of the market for browsers, software that connects computer users to the Web, according to Net Applications, based in Aliso Viejo, California. Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, has 74 percent.
