 Longest netball match: Durham University netball players sets world record

Durham, UK -- 23 members of Durham University's netball team just ended their 72-hour marathon challenge - setting the new world record for the Longest netball match, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

The Guinness world record for the longest marathon playing netball lasted 61 hours and was achieved by Netball Alberta (Canada) at the South Fish Creek Recreation Complex in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most consecutive netball passes: 164, set by pupils of Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK.

  The players, drawn from three university teams, spent up to four hours on court before getting a break, then going back on. Most tried to sleep on the floor. Many were injured, strapped up and sent back into action.

  The final score was 3,560-3,414, The Northern Echo reported.

  Having started playing at Maiden Castle sports centre, in Durham, they passed the previous Guinness world record of 61 hours, set by a Canadian club – but continued for a further 11 hours in the hope of holding the world record holder title for as long as possible.

  According to The Northern Echo, organiser Maxime Rowson, a 19- year-old law student from Kent, said: "It's been so much harder than we expected – but the finish was absolutely brilliant."
