The Guinness world record for the highest batting average achieved by a player during an Olympic tournament is 571 by Luigi Carrozza (Italy) at Atlanta, Georgia, USA in 1996.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Highest batting average in a first-class career (male), set by Sir Don Bradman (Australia), with 95.14 whilst playing for New South wales, South Australia and Australia between 1927-49. (28,067 runs in 338 innings, including 43 not outs).

Each crack of the bat raised money for the Dan Gambardella Memorial Fund, which was set up in honor of Filippone's friend, who was killed by a drunken driver back in 2011. Gambardella's widow started the charity to help local families in need.

Filippone powered through fatigue, muscle pain and hunger to complete his goal. Afterward, he told News 12, "Setting this record coupled with Father's Day, I think I deserve a monster steak."

As part of the fundraising efforts, onlookers were invited to pitch a bucket of balls to Filippone, the president of the North Babylon Youth League.

Filippone, a former third baseman at Lindenhurst High School, quit smoking 10 months ago. He lost 25 pounds and trained three times a week at a Copiague gym.

"When it was all over, Filippone said he felt great besides an aching back. A pair of EMTs took his blood pressure and taped up his bloodied and blistered hands," the NY Patch reported.
