 Largest cup pyramid: Ideal Schools Students sets world record

ASHBURN, VA, USA -- Scott McCrae, Calvin Salacain, Billy Allenand Edward Reynoldsof the Ideal School in Ashburn accomplished a feat that is more difficult than it first sounds: stacking 500 cups into a tower in fewer than 30 minutes - setting the new world record for the Largest cup pyramid - 30 mins .

The Guinness world record for the Largest can pyramid - 30 mins was set by The Malaysia Can team, consisting of students from the INTI College Subang Jaya, who constructed a pyramid consisting of 9,455 empty aluminum beverage cans in 24 minutes.

  Guinness World Records also recognized The fastest sport stacking individual cycle stack: 5.93 seconds, achieved by Steven Purugganan (USA) at the WSSA Greater Cleveland Ohio Sport Stacking Championships Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

  The attempt started as a challenge in the classroom, and quickly turned into a personal challenge for the students to see how high they could go.

  "I thought it would be a record like building it as tall as possible," Calvin said after the group completed the challenge. "But what we got back from Guinness World Records was that we would have to build a tower with 500 cups in 30 minutes."

   When the initial supply of cups ran out, Principal Deep Sran provided more -- approximately 3,000 more.

  From there, the students took their newfound appreciation for cup stacking to the next level.

  Challenged with attempting to break a world record as part of their classroom curriculum, the students touched on the cup idea during a brainstorming session.

  "We just thought of the cup towers and figured it was something that was possible, given our resources," Scott said.
