The Guinness World Records' record for the most people solving Rubik's cubes simultaneously is 3,248 and was achieved by the College of Engineering Pune at the College of Engineering, Pune, Maharashtra, India, on 4 November 2012.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest Rubik's Cube mosaic; it measures 277.18 m² (2,983.54 ft²) and was created by Josh Chalom (USA) and unveiled at One Central Macau, China on 7 December 2012. There are 85,626 cubes were used to create the mosaic. The mosaic measures 68.78 m (225 ft 7.87 in) by 4.03 m (13 ft 2.66 in).

Etter's performance shaved three-tenths of a second from the record fellow speedcuber Collin Burns set earlier this year, and Burns' record would've fallen over the weekend even if Etter had fallen short.

In 2014 Lucas set another record for the smaller "2x2x2" Rubik's Cube, beating it in 1.69 seconds during a World Cube Association-sponsored competition at the University of Michigan.

The Rubik's cube was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, a Hungarian architect, who wanted a working model to help explain three-dimensional geometry. Immediately after he invented it, it took Erno more than a month to solve his own puzzle.
