  Fastest time in completing a 6x6 Rubik's cube: Kevin Hays breaks Guinness world record (VIDEO)

SURREY, BC, Canada -- Kevin Hays, 19, from Renton, USA, solved the 6x6 Rubik's cube in 1 minute, 40 seconds, at the Vancouver Open in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, setting the new world record for the Fastest time in completing a 6x6 Rubik's cube, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

 The Guinness World Records' record for the most people solving Rubik's cubes simultaneously is 3,248 and was achieved by the College of Engineering Pune at the College of Engineering, Pune, Maharashtra, India.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest Rubik's Cube mosaic, which was 8.78 m (28 ft 10 in) by 4.44 m (14 ft 7 in) and was created by Cube Works Studio (Canada).

  The 2012 graduate of Liberty High School solved the cube in 1 minute, 40 seconds at the Vancouver Open in Surrey, British Columbia.

  "The previous weekend I won the Rubik's Cube World Championships in the 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 events," he said.

  The "normal" Rubik's cube has 9 squares on each side. The 6x6 has 36 squares on each side.

  "When I started it was a pretty nerdy thing to do," he said. "But when I started winning things, people were like, OK."

  Hays just completed his freshmen year at Washington University in St. Louis with an intended double major in math and computer science.
