 Most people making sandwiches: British Sandwich Association smash Guinness world record (VIDEO)

LONDON, UK -- Some 607 sandwich-makers gathered at Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, England, to each make a sandwich in five minutes, as part of celebrations for British Sandwich Week, setting the new world record for the Most people making sandwiches simultaneously (in a five minute period), according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

 The Guinness world record for the most people making sandwiches simultaneously is 254 and was achieved by Subway (USA) at TimesCenter in New York, New York, USA.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest open sandwich; it is 1,151.67 kg (2,539 lb), which was prepared by T-Bones Roadhouse (USA), during the Plymouth Waterfront Food Festival, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.

  The new world record more than doubled the previous Guinness world record, set by food chain Subway .

  Each participant had five minutes to butter bread, insert their choice of filling, add mayonnaise and pack away into a lunch box.

 Sandwich lovers from across the UK gathered at the event, organised by the British Sandwich Association, to launch its 'Love Lunch' campaign encouraging people to take a regular lunch break.

  Jim Winship, director of the British Sandwich Association, said: "We wanted to do something for British Sandwich Week that would kick the week off and make a bit of noise for us, and we thought this would be a good idea."

  "Sandwiches are a big business in this country so it's something we want to shout about. The important thing is it brings the entire industry together."
