  Longest skewer of meat: Japan's Ishigaki Island sets world record

Ishigaki Island, Japan -- At a barbecue challenge intended to promote local Ishigaki Beef at the planned site of a new airport, a 353 feet (107.6-meters) beef kebab was made on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture; it sets the new world record for the Longest skewer of meat, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

  The previous Guinness world record was 97.5 metres, set in Lebanon.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest doner kebab; it weighed 413 kg (910.5 lb) and was made by the Maroosh Lebanese Café at the Applause Festival, Albury, New South Wales, Australia .

  The World's Longest Skewer of Meat used approximately 315kg of locally-produced "Ishigaki-Gyuu" (Ishigaki Beef) cut into 3500 individual 4cm cubes.

  Thousands of people on southern Ishigaki island tucked into the 107.6 metre monster, the world's longest, in an event to promote the premium Ishigaki beef, local tourism agency official Shuntaro Kosasa said.

  The stainless steel skewer had to be repaired twice before the world's longest kebab was successfully cooked

  Some 15,000 people - around a third of the island's population - later tucked into the kebab, he added.
