Longest barbecued sausage (boerewors): AfriForum Youth set world record

Johannesburg, South Africa -- Together with the girl band Saarkie, the singer and comedian Thys die Bosveldklong and seven other farmers' associations of Mokopane district Agricultural Union (DAU), AfriForum Youth grilled a 514,5 meter long boerewors (south african sausage delicacy) at the Windpomp Festival in Mookgophong (Naboomspruit) , setting the world record for the Longest barbecued sausage (boerewors).

  The previous world record was 321 meters.

The Guinness world record for the longest sausage roll is 111.11 m (364 ft 6.4 in) and was achieved by King Pie in Faerie Glen, South Africa.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the longest vegetarian sausage; it measured 101 m (331 ft 4 in) and was achieved by Metzgerei Schnitzel e.V. (Germany) in Dusseldorf, Germany.

  The massive boerewors weighed about 420kg and 40 people worked together to put it on the roster.

 "There were a couple of close calls, but luckily the boerewors didn't break during the braai," Charl Oberholzer, national chairperson of AfriForum Youth, said.

  Oberholzer said the boerewors was afterwards distributed to various old age homes in the district and pensioners were able to eat for free on the day.

 "It is important on Youth Day that the youth honours the older people and show that we care, even if it's only by attempting to break a boereworsbraai-record and providing a free plate of food."
