  Longest Torta sandwich: Mexico City sets world record despite Guinness' rejection (VIDEO)

MEXICO CITY, Mexico -- The local government and 80 businesses in Mexico City organised a super sandwich in the hope it would give the Mexican torta a much-needed boost in sales, pitting itself against imported fast food chains; measuring in at 58-metres long the monster sandwich sets the new world record for the Longest Torta sandwich, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

 The Guinness World Records' record for the most people making sandwiches simultaneously is 607 and was achieved by British Sandwich Association (UK), in Manchester, UK, on 14 May 2013.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most sandwiches made in one hour: 2,706 - achieved by Eckrich Bacon Lovers Deli Meats (USA) in New York, New York, USA, on 21 May 2013.

  Each section of the 750kg torta has a different flavour cooked up by local chefs - to compliment thousands of pieces of bread, lettuce, onion and tomato.

  The World's longest torta sandwich was also drowned in hundreds of litres of mayonnaise, mustard and spicy sauces - anything but healthy.

  'We're celebrating the tenth anniversary of this 'mega-torta'. It's a family event, it's an event where (people) can become familiar with great Mexican food. It's a typically Mexican event and we don't want to lose this tradition,' local government official Marco Aguilar told Reuters.

  Despite its size the mega-torta didn't quite make it into the Guinness Book of World Records - the largest sandwich ever recorded by them measured in at over 730 metres. The heaviest ever made in the US weighed 2,467.5 kg, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Guinness World Records has rejected this new category (torta sandwich) years ago, but the World Record Academy has 'unlimited' categories and recognized this type of record, twice.

  The torta challenge is part of a five-day festival that supports the traditional Mexican sandwich. More than 350,000 people are expected to attend the fair with high hopes of selling hundreds of thousands of tortas.
