Largest serving of fried chicken  - world record set by KFC
LOUISVILLE, Ky., USA -- Kentucky Fried Chicken ( KFC ), a unit of Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) served 2,493.35 lbs. of fried chicken to the citizens of Louisville - setting the new world record for the Largest serving of fried chicken during the celebration of KFC’s 70th anniversary of its Original Recipe of 11 herbs and spices.

Visitors were treated to free chicken as "Colonel" Bob Thompson -- a Col. Sanders look-alike, spokesperson for Kentucky Fried Chicken and (according to his business card) "ambassador for the World Chicken Festival" -- looked on.

An overseas KFC set the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest serving of fried chicken in 2009. Last month, Brookville, Ind. broke the world record while dishing out 1,645 pounds of chicken.

This attempt also served to “bring the world record back to its rightful home, Kentucky,” according to Doug Hasselo, chief food innovation officer for KFC.

KFC will also be donating thousands of pieces to Louisville’s Dare to Care Food Bank, an independent, nonprofit, corporation that distributes food to the less fortunate through a network of 320 independent food pantries, emergency kitchens, and shelters, according to Dare to Care’s official website.

Today, the Original Recipe is locked in a safe in Louisville. Only a handful of people know the elements of the multi-million dollar recipe, and each is held to a strict confidentiality agreement.

To protect the recipe’s secret legacy, one company blends a formula for one part of the recipe, while another spice company blends the rest. A computer processing system blends these two mixtures together, ensuring neither company has access to the full recipe.
