  Largest Scone-world record set by the Chilterns Gateway Centre   

  DOWNS, UK -- During the Dunstable Downs Food Festival, staff at the Chilterns Gateway Centre cooked a giant scone, weighing 132.27 lbs (60kg) and with a circumference of 35.03 inches (89cm)- setting the new world record for the Largest Scone .

   Baking in association with the National Trust (NT), which is famed for its delicious cream teas, Prudens Bakery on the High Street used its giant three by two metre wide oven to create the 60kg scone .

   Andrew Pruden, whose family have been baking at the Markyate shop since 1928, said that it was a novel experience: "We've never baked anything quite so big at Prudens and it filled the whole village with the smell of fresh scones! We were happy to help the National Trust in their mission and I hear it tasted great too."

   Catering Manager at the NT Chiltern Gateway Centre in Whipsnade Fran Brennan helped mixed the scone batter at midnight with help from Prudens giant food mixer. After just over three hours in the oven and a couple of hours cooling time, the enormous baked treat was taken to the Dunstable Downs centre.

   Fran, a keen baker, said that it went down a storm with visitors: "It tasted even better than our regular scones - perhaps we've discovered a new rule of baking: the bigger the better! Despite its huge size, there wasn't even a crumb left at the end of the day. We're already dreaming up plans to make an even larger one.

 The festival was a week-long celebration of food and drink, and included a farmers' and craft market, a teddy bears' picnic, a cream tea dance, a multi-cultural event giving people a chance to try new tastes, a history and food event and a summer fair.

  The festival is being funded by Bedfordshire County Council, Sainsburys and the Chilterns Conservation Board's Sustainable Development Fund and is also receiving support from Tastes of Bedfordshire.

   The festival aims are to promote local produce, raise awareness of the benefits of eating locally produced food and encourage new visitors to the Downs.

   Clive Beckett from Bedfordshire County Council said: "This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about locally produced food and drink. There will be fun and interesting activities for the whole family to enjoy throughout the week. I would like to thank all the partners involved in this project and I am looking forward to seeing people of all ages enjoying themselves throughout the Food Festival".
