FRISCO, TX, USA -- Frisco’s Northstar Church welcomed 355 teens and their parents to build a 3,555 pounds, 48-foot-long tray of nachos loaded with chips, cheese, salsa and jalapenos - setting the new world record for the Largest plate of nachos .

The previous Guinness world record for the Largest plate of nachos was a 3,158-pound plate of nachos, set in 2008 by a restaurant in Richmond, VA

A custom plate, 48-feet long and 4-feet wide, was built to hold 2,200 pounds of yellow tortilla chips, 600 pounds of nacho cheese, 200 pounds of shredded cheddar cheese, 250 pounds of sour cream, 250 pounds of jalapeños, and 200 pounds of picante sauce.

After the chips came the nacho cheese, the picante sauce and the jalapenos. Then came the heat lamps borrowed from local auto body shops to cook the concoction. The final weight: 3,555.25 pounds.

John Cantrell Jr. punched in numbers on his Hewlett Packard 32sII scientific calculator. Cantrell, who is certified by the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying, was enlisted to fulfill the requirement to officially measure this record-breaking attempt.

“We felt this record rightfully belonged in Texas,” said Assistant Pastor Chris Lindberg, who's been dreaming for years of breaking into the record books.
“Our philosophy is to be irresistible to teens and their families. As you can see, we offer a fun and meaningful was for students to grow mentally, physically, socially and spiritually.”

“We had to document everything from hand washing to the weight of ingredients on packages,” Lindberg said. “A fellow was here from Texas’s weights and measures the entire night.” The church also had to get approval from the city's health board for the trough design and the food prep plan.

The project is part of Arora , the youth ministry of Northstar Church, now housed in their new building at 7125 Legacy Drive.

Every Wednesday night Arora provides a cost-free, alcohol-free and drug-free event for students in 6th through 12th grades. Teens enjoy live music, billiards, carpet-ball and the largest video game screen in Frisco.

The effort extends beyond Frisco. Church leaders say Arora offers a fun and meaningful way for Dallas youth to grow mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. As for the nachos, records were made to be broken.

Organizers offer up a big "thanks" to the sponsors of the historic nacho-making event: Snyder’s of Hanover and Dr Pepper. Their donations and assistance made the event possible.
