 Largest fruit salad: Fresno State students sets world record (Video)

FRESNO, CA, USA -- Fresno State marketing students cut up over 8,000 pounds of plums, nectarines, pears, apples and peaches to make a giant fruit salad weighing in at 10,440 pounds - which sets the new world record for the Largest fruit salad, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

  The previous Guinness world record for the Largest fruit salad was set by a fruit salad weighing 4.02 tonnes (8,866 lb), made by La Florida and was displayed in the Main Square, La Merced, Chanchamayo, Peru.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest continuous salad bar, constructed by Nola Mayonnaise (South Africa) which measured 201.2 m (660.10 ft).

  The World's Largest Fruit Salad consisted of sliced peaches, plums, nectarines, apples and Asian pears – all donated by local packinghouses including Kingsburg Orchards and Trinity Fruit Sales.

    About 30 people that included students, friends and volunteers spent nearly 10 hours at the P-R Farms packinghouse at Willow and Shepherd avenues slicing and dicing about 12,000 pounds of fruit.

   A makeshift serving bowl – it was actually a 2,500-gallon water tank – was used to hold the fruit while it was weighed on a truck scale.

   The students, taught by marketing professor Dr. William Rice, teamed up with local fruit packing companies that donated apples, Asian pears, nectarines, peaches and plums.

  Fresno State student Sam Mabanta said, "After we're done with this, we're going to package it, donate it to charities throughout Fresno. We're going to Poverello House, the Rescue Mission, Food Bank; we're donating it all to charity.

   The fruit was mixed with fifty 32-ounce containers of lemon juice, "The Collegian" reports. As fruit was cut, it was placed in plastic-lined bins and held in cold storage.

   For it to be a record, Guinness World Records requires that there be at least five fruits and that they be equally represented in the total. The fruit must be cut by hand.

  California Highway Patrol officer Axel Reyes, known to local TV viewers for traffic updates and as a patrol spokesman, and Frank Alvarez, a forestry technician with the United States Department of Agriculture's Forest Service, were the official witnesses.

   "We will have a drive through where people can get a bag of fruit," Fresno State student and organizer of the event Nick Morales said.

  "We really wanted to do something related to all the things we grow in the Valley and what better thing than tree fruit, something we are leaders in," Morales said.
