  Largest Fried Rice: Costa Rica breaks Guinness world record (VIDEO)

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Fifty-two chefs and 20 assistants from 35 local restaurants cooked a 1.3-ton plate of fried rice as part of the community's Chinese New Year celebrations, setting the new world record for the Largest Fried Rice, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

Guinness World Records recognized the world record for the longest bamboo rice; it is 1.6 km (0.99 mi), achieved by Benny J Mamoto and sponsored by PT. Indofood Sukses Makmur, at Pinabetengan Village, Tompaso, Minahasa, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

 The Guinness world record for the largest taco rice weighed 746 kg (1,644 lb 10 oz) and was made by Kincho Shokokai (Japan) at Nature Miraikan Koryu Hiroba in Kin-cho, Okinawa, Japan.

  The cooking took more than six hours and used 1,620 pounds of rice and 573 pounds of chicken. Hundreds of passersby lined up to try the rice, which organizers estimated could feed some 7,000 people.

  "We are very proud to say that the world's largest fried rice was cooked today in Costa Rica, because not even in China has a similar amount of rice been cooked simultaneously," association president Isabel Yung told Xinhua.

  Yung said all the ingredients and cooking utensils were from Costa Rica and the rice was prepared by Chinese-Costa Ricans from various Chinese restaurants.

  Chinese labourers first moved to Costa Rica in the 19th century to work on European settlements and railroads.
