Cooks were forced to stand on special scaffolding to cut the 2.5 metre long kebab as spectators waited in line to try it in a sandwich.

The previous Guinness world record holder weighed in at only 468 kilograms.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest skewer of kebab meat ; it weighed 4,022 kg (8,866 lb 15 oz) and was achieved by Zith Catering Equipment LTD and the Municipality of Pafos (both Cyprus) in Pafos, Cyprus.

10 cooks were required to make the 2.5m long dish that weighed in at 1,198 kg, over twice that of the previous record, a doner kebab made in Dubai in 2009 at 468 kg.

The doner kebab — cooked on a vertical spit — is one of Turkey's most famous dishes and dates back to the Ottoman Empire.

The doner kebab as many of us know it was invented by Mahmut Aygun in 1971, who had the idea of putting the meat inside a pita bread.
