  Largest cachupa stew: world record set in Cape Verde (VIDEO)

   PRAIA, Cape Verde -- Cape Verde's prime minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, was on hand as a group of more than a dozen chefs made a 14,021-pound pot of cachupa stew, at the ninth "Badja ku Sol" festival in Praia, thus setting the new world record for the Largest cachupa stew, according to the World Record Academy .

   The stew was made using 1,322 pounds of corn, 220 pounds of chicken, and 661pounds of pork mixed in with large heaps of beans and vegetables.

   Cachupa is a famous dish from the Cape Verde islands, West Africa. This slow cooked stew of corn (hominy), beans, cassava, sweet potato, fish or meat (sausage, beef, goat or chicken) is often referred to as the country's national dish.


    More than 30,000 people got the chance to sample small bowls of the massive serving of cachupa stew, as adjudicators confirmed the record.

   "We are proud of this achievement and I believe it can be considered an example of the determination of Cape Verdeans people to innovate and to want to be with the best in the world," event organizer, Hernidia Tavares, said.
