  Largest 'Torta' Sandwich: Mexico City breaks world record (PICS & VIDEO)

 MEXICO CITY, Mexic -- Dozens of cooks joined forces in Mexico City to prepare a 173-feet long (53-metres) monster torta sandwich, as part of the opening ceremony of the ninth annual Torta Fair celebrated in the Venustiano Carrazanda borough - setting the new world record for the Largest 'Torta' sandwich, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/.

The Guinness world record for the longest line of sandwiches is 2,667.13 m (8,750 ft 4.91 in) and was achieved by Kraft Foods Middle East and Africa FZE (United Arab Emirates) in Dubai Outlet Mall, Dubai (UAE).

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest open sandwich; it was a spam sandwich weighing 749.33 kg (1,652 lb) which was prepared by the John C. Fremont Days planning committee (USA) during the annual festival in the John C. Fremont Park, Fremont, in Nebraska, USA.

  A torta is a type of sandwich popular in Mexican cuisine, and can be stuffed with egg, sausage, ham, steak, or cheese.

  The world record attempt was part of the opening ceremony of the ninth annual Torta Fair celebrated in the Venustiano Carrazanda borough.

  The 700kg torta was stuffed with 70 different fillings, including steak, chicken, seafood, turkey, fish and bacon.

  Each section of the 700 kg (154 lb) super torta had a different flavour cooked up by local chefs.

  It took the cooks a little over four minutes to put together the sandwich, although toppings and bread were prepared ahead of the event.

  "Now we have the challenge of eating the 53-metre-long torta," said Elena Segura, a Venustiano Carrazanda Borough official.

  The goal of the event is to promote the Mexican staple food as well as small local businesses, said Ms Segura.

  Officials estimate that more than 350,000 people will visit the fair over the next five days.

  About 600,000 tortas will be sold during the event, according to organisers.
