The Guinness World Records' record for the hottest chilli is Smokin Ed's 'Carolina Reaper', grown by The PuckerButt Pepper Company (USA), which rates at an average of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), according to tests conducted by Winthrop University in South Carolina, USA, throughout 2012.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Largest hamburger patty, made by Loran Green and Friends of Hi Line Promotions, who made a burger of pure Montana beef weighing 2.74 tonnes (6,040 lb) at the Sleeping Buffalo Resort at Saco, Montana on 5 September 1999. The hamburger measured 7.32 m (24 ft) in diameter.

Xtreme Smokehouse and Grill owner Loren Gingrich says his newest creation, the "Hellfire Burger," has a rating of more than one million on the Scoville heat scale. A single jalapeno pepper is rated around five thousand on the heat scale.

"We actually have a ghost burger, and I wanted to do something that was hotter," said Gingrich.

To create the "Hellfire Burger," Gingrich starts with his homemade hot pepper relish, then a slab of beef infused with cayenne peppers and pure chili extract. He douses that with a ring of hellfire sauce and with a splash of grain alcohol and a spark.

Anyone that tries the "Hellfire Burger" has to wear gloves and goggles just to take a bite.

Xtreme Smokehouse and Grill puts cayenne pepper, pure chili extract and a hot pepper relish on the burger before topping it off with grain alcohol and lighting it with a spark.

The $12 burger is served on a brioche bun with lettuce, pickle, tomato and cheddar cheese.

Gingrich estimates the burger rates around 1,000,000 or higher on the Scoville Heat Scale. For comparison, a single jalapeno pepper rates between 2,500 and 5,000. U.S.-grade pepper spray is around 2,000,000

Not content with just having the burger on the menu, Gingerich plans to expand the experience of eating one into a challenge that also includes finishing "Hellfire Chili," "Hellfire Fries" and a "Hellfire Salad" with "Hellfire Ranch Dressing."
