  Richest Doctor: Patrick Soon-Shiong sets world record (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES, USA -- Patrick Soon-Shiong, 62, is a South African-born American surgeon, medical researcher, businessman, philanthropist, and professor at University of California at Los Angeles; he is currently chairman of the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation and chairman and CEO of the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health, National LambdaRail, the Healthcare Transformation Institute and NantWorks, LLC; with a net worth of US$12 billion, he sets the new world record for the Richest Doctor, according to the World Record Academy .

The Guinness World Records' record for the richest fashion designer is Giorgio Armani (Italy). Clothes, watches, perfumes, homeware, and hotels all bear his name an incredible achievement for a medical school drop-out who's now worth a record $5.3 billion (£3.3 billion).

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the Richest luxury goods maker, set by Bernard Arnault (France), who heads the luxury goods empire LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), is worth an estimated $41 billion (approx. £26 billion) as of March 2011.

Soon-Shiong heads the CSS Institute for Advanced Health , founded in 2011 with a mission to provide high-speed computing capabilities for human genotyping to target specific cancer treatments, as well as technologies for the better management of chronic disease.

   Through the CSS Institute, Soon-Shiong is working to create a national health information network for the secure sharing of biomedical information.

    In 1991 he invented the drug that made his fortune: Abraxane, which packages the top-selling cancer drug, Taxol, inside the protein albumin. The idea was that tumors would eat the albumin and get the poison.

  Patrick Soon-Shiong is now in philanthropy mode, giving away most of his fortune to children's charities and hospitals.

    He is currently chairman of the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation and chairman and CEO of the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health , National LambdaRail, the Healthcare Transformation Institute and NantWorks, LLC.

   He is minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and is ranked by Forbes as the wealthiest American in the healthcare industry and the wealthiest man in Los Angeles with a net worth of US$12 billion.

Forbes put his current net worth at $12 billion.

   In October 2010, he acquired a 4.5% stake in the Los Angeles Lakers after buying the shares of Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

   In 2011 Forbes estimated his fortune at $7.2 billion, ranking him #39 among US billionaires.

   Soon-Shiong is ranked by  Forbes as the wealthiest American in the healthcare industry and by the Los Angeles Business Journal as the wealthiest person in Los Angeles.

   Soon-Shiong and his wife, Michele B. Chan, fund several health-related projects through the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation.
