  Longest chain of safety pins: Watertown breaks Guinness World Records record

WATERTOWN, N.Y., USA -- Organizers of the Pins Across Watertown event were able to link up 10,552 feet (3,216 Meters) — or almost two miles — of safety pins in a chunk of the downtown business district, shattering the old Guinness World records record by nearly 7,000 feet and setting the new world record for the Longest chain of safety pins, according to the World Record Academy .

The Guinness World Records' record for the longest chain of safety pins measures 1,091.8 m (3,582 ft 0 in) and was created by Misha Collins (USA), as part of the GISHWHES event at Central Park, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, on 15 August 2013 The number of safety pins in the entire chain was 43,098.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the longest rubber band chain; it was assembled by school children from Gettysburg Elementary School in Clovis, California, USA and measured 30.5 km (19 miles) long.

    Sponsored by the Watertown Downtown Business Association, the event was a way to put the city on the map and showcase downtown, organizers said.

    It took several hours for dozens of volunteers to connect the more than 175,000 safety pins used to set the record. And they came from both ends of the county, from Clayton to Carthage, to help, The Watertown Daily Times reports.

    The money raised by the event will be shared by the United Way of Northern New York, Watertown Urban Mission, the Salvation Army, Watertown Y and Jefferson County Historical Society. The safety pins used were collected, weighed, and donated to the Urban Mission.
