SUNKET, Nizamabad, India -- Social studies
teacher M.S. Acharya
, 50,
commissioned the
construction of a 40-kg, 16-foot-tall, 1-foot-wide brass pen
that he calls " Bharatiya Pali
," or 
" India's
Pen
," to honor the government's passage of the Right
to Education law - setting the new world record for the Largest
Pen
.

The work of making the World's
Largest Pen
was done by two Hyderabad artists, Ratnam
and Malikarajan
, who etched various Indian dance styles
and musical instruments all over it.
It started with sheets of brass, cut and
soldered into 10 cylindrical structures. After cleaning the
surface, the artists began etching.
The trio started working on the Largest
Pen in The World
in early February and spent nearly
450 working hours and 250,000 rupees (about $5,555 U.S.) getting
the pen just right.
"We worked Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. for a total of 56 days," Acharya said.
"Since it is the token of our love and appreciation,
none of us complained about undertaking so much effort."
“ I thought I should present something unique
to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a token of appreciation
for bringing in the Right to Education Act,” Acharya said.
“ My only wish is that all the children
in the country should have the right to primary education.
They should have access to pen and pencil, which are their
weapons to fight against poverty and illiteracy."
" My idea of presenting this as a gift to
the Prime Minister is that whenever he sees it in his drawing
room, it should remind him of those children who are deprived
of their right to education,” Acharya said.
According
to Guinness World Records, Zbigniew Rozanek
previously
hold the record for the largest
pen
that is not a ball point. The pen, which earned
the mark in 1991, measured 7 feet, 4 inches in diameter with
a nib length of 18 inches.
