Largest Outdoor Skating Rink-world record set
by Mexico City
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico City's Zocalo, one of the largest
public squares in the world, hosts a 3,080 square meters
(33,152.8440 square feet) skating rink-which set the world record
for the Largest
Outdoor Skating Rink
.

largest ice skating rink
in the world measures 40
meters by 77 meters, or 133 feet by 253 feet. Seventy-four
kilometers, or 46 miles, of tubes run under the ice to 10
chilling machines as big a trucks, each capable of freezing
a small rink itself.

Mexico City's Zocalo, one of the largest public
squares in the world, was packed with thousands of individuals
and families who didn't want to miss the rink's opening, the
lighting-up of the capital's Christmas decorations and the
traditional fireworks.
Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard contends
that the world
record rink
, which is funded by private donations,
provides a way for the many poor of Mexico City to enjoy some
of the same winter activities as the wealthy.

The project cost about $1.5 million. Key Entertainment,
an American company, built it, along with subcontractors,
officials said. Several large Mexican businesses donated the
money, among them the country's largest sporting good chain,
a major television network and one of the biggest toy chains.
While the rink admission as well as the skates
are free to visitors, the waiting time for the world's largest
outdoor rink
often runs to several hours.
