  Largest Horseshoe: Martinsville breaks Guinness world record

MARTINSVILLE, IL, USA -- A measuring ceremony to document the size and weight of the horseshoe patterned and poured by the Rowe Foundry in Martinsville was held June 21; the horseshoe is solid cast iron, weighing 1,144.2 pounds and measuring 5 feet, 1 1/4 inches in height; 5 feet 8 inches in width; and 4 feet 5/8 inches thick, breaking the Guinness World Records' record and setting the new world record for the Largest Horseshoe, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

The Guinness World Records' record for the largest handforged horseshoe measures 56 cm (1 ft 10 in) height, 61.5 cm (2 ft) width and was created by six clients and two employees of Caritas Tagesstätte Krumbach (all Austria) at the international blacksmith festival FERRACULUM 2008 in Ybbsitz, Austria.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest horseshoe sculpture; it contained 1,071 horsehoes and was created by Donnie Faulk (USA) in Pulaski, Tennessee, United States, with the final measurement being made on 4 September 2006. The sculpture was a lifesize horse.

  Visitors can see the World's Largest Horseshoe at the main entrance into the Fairgrounds at 620 S. York St., on the southern end of Martinsville, the Journal Gazette & Times- Courier reported.

  A measuring ceremony to document the size and weight of the horseshoe was held June 21, with state Sen. Dale Righter, state Rep. Brad Halbrook, and equestrian experts Jerry Hammond and Randy Callahan serving as witnesses. John Davidson served as the surveyor and Buckner served as the steward for the event.

  Hammond and Callahan noted that the exactness of the shape and finished edges, plus the detail of the nail prints, make this landmark look like an authentic racing shoe.

  The World's largest horseshoe is solid cast iron, weighing 1,144.2 pounds and measuring 5 feet, 1 1/4 inches in height; 5 feet 8 inches in width; and 4 feet 5/8 inches thick.
