  Largest floating Christmas tree: Brazil breaks Guinness World Records' record (VIDEO)

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- The Christmas tree which is now viewable in Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is being illuminated by 3.3 million lights, breaking the Guinness World Records' record; the 85 meters tall, 542-tonne tree sets the new world record for the Largest floating Christmas tree, according to the World Record Academy: www.worldrecordacademy.com/ .

The previous Guinness World Records' record for the largest floating Christmas tree measured 85 m (278 ft 10 in) in height and was erected as an annual tradition in Rodrigo De Freitas Lagoon in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil for Christmas 2007.

  Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest human Christmas tree; it was achieved by 672 participants at an event organised E-Plus Gruppe (Germany) in Düsseldorf, Germany.

  The holiday season officially begins in Rio de Janeiro, with the lighting of the world's largest floating Christmas tree.

   Standing at 85 metres (279 feet), the tree was decorated in themes depicting water, air, forests, humanity and Christmas.

  The 542-tonne tree lit up with 3.1 million lights. Figures of dolphins, seahorses and fish represented water. The colors of sunset, and birds, for air. Butterflies, macaws and monkeys, for forests. People linking hands symbolized humanity.

  The lights of the World's Largest Floating Christmas Tree will be turned on every night until Jan. 6.

  The tallest Christmas tree will be moved over the next few weeks to two other locations on the lagoon so it can viewed from different parts of the city.
