SAN DIEGO, CA, USA -- Enrique Miramontes
and
his friend Ricardo Granados
created a giant ball made
of paper which now weighs 200 pounds and is 3 feet high-setting
the world record for the Largest
Ball of Paper
.

of 8½ x 11 paper and layers them on top of each other to build
the ball. He used to work on the project three hours a day
but has scaled back to about an hour a day, he said. ( enlarge

Miramontes gets used paper from friends who get
it from their schools or workplaces. And he uses only masking
tape, which is made from paper.
These days, Miramontes works on the ball alone.
Granados moved out of state about three years ago but sends
money to buy tape.
They started making the ball in 2003. Year
after year it amassed and Miramontes – now 23 – wondered what
to do with it.
Once it gets bigger – Miramontes fully
expects it to reach 12 feet high – he'll need to find a place
to store it.
His girlfriend can barely roll it out
of the way to clean. “I used to complain, but now I'm used
to it,” said Michele Trujillo
.
Already he has a Web
site dedicated to the ball
, which now sits between
the television and couch at his San Ysidro home.
In the six years Miramontes has worked on the
ball, he has spent $3,000 on masking tape, 2,015 hours on
the ball and 300 hours on the Web
site
, which launched in January.
