Lowest fuel consumption in a non-hybrid car: Diesel VW breaks Guinness World Records record (VIDEO)

HERNDON, VA, USA -- A 2015 VW Golf TDI has broken the Guinness World Records achievement for "lowest fuel consumption—48 US contiguous States for a non-hybrid car", averaging just a little over 81 mpg; the 2015 Golf TDI Clean Diesel traveled 8,233.5 miles (13,250.5 km) around America in 16 days, averaging 81.17 mpg (2.9 l/100 km or 97.5 mpg UK),

The diesel hatchback averaged 81.18 mpg over the course of 8,233.5 miles, while visiting each of the continental 48 U.S. states. The entire trip was done on 101.43 gallons of fuel at a cost of $294.98. ( enlarge photo )

The Guinness World Records' record for the record for longest journey by car using alternative fuel is 48,535.5 km (30,158.5 mi) and was achieved by Driven to Sustain (Canada) using biodiesel and vegetable oil.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the most countries visited on a single tank of fuel; it is 14 and was achieved by RAC and Audi UK (both UK) on 9-10 June 2015.

The 2015 Golf TDI Clean Diesel traveled 8,233.5 miles (13,250.5 km) around America in 16 days, averaging 81.17 mpg (2.9 l/100 km or 97.5 mpg UK).    This means the car only needed $294.98 worth of diesel fuel.

The Golf not only beat the previous Guinness World Records record of 77.99 mpg (3 l/100 km), but also the hybrid vehicle record of 74.34 mpg (3.16 l/100 km).

The car was driven by Wayne Gerdes, automotive journalist and founder of cleanmpg.com, while Bob Winger, an electronics engineer long involved in energy and conservation projects, acted as a co-driver.

"Volkswagen's TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing. I don't think people realize the potential mileage you can get from them. In our experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using just a few simple fuel-saving techniques," said Wayne Gerdes.

The 2015 Golf TDI is powered by Volkswagen's turbocharged and direct-injection Clean Diesel engine, which delivers EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 45 mpg (5.2 l/100 km) when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission.
